In the workplace, a variety of hazardous materials must be handled by various personnel. In order to ensure proper handling of those materials and their proper disposal when there is a spill or when it is time to discard those materials, Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) are provided as a form of workplace safety.
Who Has a Need for Material Safety Data Sheets?
MSDS are intended to provide workplace personnel and/or emergency workers with information regarding the proper ways to handle and work with those substances such that workers, the workplace, and the environment are kept as safe as possible. MSDS provide vast amounts of information on whatever substances must be dealt with. The data involved includes such information as melting, boiling, and flash points, as well as specific guidelines for handling spills. In addition, information is included regarding possible health hazards involved with the substance. Workers and emergency personnel can also consult MSDS to determine what first aid should be administered in the event of an emergency situation with the substance. There are also details regarding proper storage and disposal of the substances involved along with a listing of any protective equipment that should be worn when handling the substance in question.
Material Safety Data Sheets are Required by Law
Because MSDS are required by the Canadian government, oversight mechanisms are in place which are monitored by the Labour Department and the various provincial ministries. Requirements for MSDS in the workplace are established by the WHMIS or Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System as part of the Hazardous Products Act and Controlled Products Regulations.
